Basil - Ocimum basilicum
Love - Protection - Wealth - Purification - Courage - Rites of Passage - Spirit Work - Threshold Magic
Few herbs carry as layered a history as basil. The name likely comes from the Greek basilikon, meaning “royal” or “kingly”, reflecting its high status in early herbal traditions. There are also later associations with the basilisk, though these are more folkloric than historically grounded.
In the ancient Mediterranean world, basil had a mixed reputation. Some Greek and Roman writers, including Dioscorides and Galen, expressed caution about its use, while other traditions embraced it fully as a plant of blessing, love, and protection. Stories about sowing basil with curses appear in folklore, though these accounts vary and are not universally attested.
In Egypt, aromatic plants including basil are believed to have been used in embalming and ritual preparation, though specific references are limited and should be treated broadly rather than as fixed practice. Across Europe, basil appears consistently in both protective and love-based uses. In Italy it became associated with courtship and attraction, while in parts of Greece and Crete it was used to ward off unwanted influence.
In Haitian Vodou, basil is associated with Erzulie, particularly in matters of love, beauty, and emotional life. In South Asian traditions, closely related species of basil are linked to devotion and spiritual passage, reinforcing the plant’s broader association with thresholds and transition.
Scott Cunningham lists basil for love, protection, wealth, and purification. In practice, it acts as a boundary herb. It attracts what is beneficial while discouraging what is not. That dual function is consistent across its history.
- Sprinkle around your space before ritual to attract beneficial influence and clear the environment
- Keep in the cash register, on the doorstep, or carry to support prosperity and business flow
- Use in love sachets or personal work to encourage attraction and connection
- Include in rites of passage or transitional work as a boundary and crossing herb
- Add to cleansing blends to support purification and reset the space
