Bladderwrack – Fucus vesiculosus
Sea Magic - Protection - Psychic Powers - Money - Elemental Water - Travel
Bladderwrack is seaweed. Very few materials in a practitioner’s materia medica come from the ocean, and those that do tend to behave differently to land-based plants.
It belongs to tidal zones, to shifting currents, to the boundary between sea and shore. That threshold has long been treated as a charged space in folk practice.
Scott Cunningham places it under the Moon and Water, associating it with protection, sea work, money drawing, and psychic awareness. Its folk names, including Sea Wrack and Black Tang, reflect its direct connection to the ocean rather than any single fixed tradition.
In practice, bladderwrack is used in workings tied to water, movement, and exchange. Some traditions include casting seaweed back into the ocean as part of offerings or requests to sea spirits. Weather work involving seaweed appears in scattered folk accounts, though these practices vary widely by region and are not standardised.
It also appears in practical magic. Infusions used in floor washes for business spaces are intended to draw movement, customers, and steady income. Jar charms using alcohol and seaweed show up in folk practice as a way of maintaining flow, particularly financial flow. These are specific examples, but they all point to the same function. Bladderwrack supports circulation to keep things from stagnating.
