Burdock is a plant of refusal.

It refuses contamination, intrusion, spiritual interference, and unwanted influence. Deep-rooted and notoriously difficult to remove once established, Burdock embodies resilience, protection, and the ability to hold firm against external pressures.

The plant's tenacity is reflected even in its name. Arctium derives from the Greek word for bear, while lappa refers to its tendency to seize and cling. Burdock holds fast. This quality became so famous that it inspired the invention of Velcro after Swiss engineer George de Mestral examined the hooks of burdock burrs attached to his dog's coat.

Throughout European folk practice, Burdock gained a reputation as a powerful protective herb. In Germanic traditions it was associated with Thor and hung over doors, windows, and stables to ward off lightning, misfortune, and hostile influences. In Turkish Anatolia, Burdock appears as a protective symbol against the evil eye and is woven into traditional textiles for this purpose.

In Hoodoo and American Conjure, Burdock became known as Bat Weed and was worked in protection and counter-magic. Cunningham places the plant under Venus and Water and records the practice of gathering Burdock Root during the waning moon, cutting it into pieces, and stringing it on red thread to create a protective amulet.

The medicinal and magical logic of Burdock are remarkably similar. Just as the herb is valued for supporting the body's natural cleansing processes, it is used magically to remove what does not belong. It clears accumulated negativity, stagnant energy, and unwanted attachments with persistence and determination.
