Elderberries - Sambucus nigra

Ancestor Work - Protection - Fae and Otherworld Work - Blessing - Transformation - Curse Removal - Magick Ink

Elder has been used across Europe for thousands of years, both medicinally and ritually. Classical sources, including Hippocrates, referred to it as a complete medicine chest. Archaeological evidence shows elder seeds in Neolithic European settlements, suggesting a long-standing relationship between people and this plant.

In European folk tradition, elder was not treated as just another tree. It was understood as inhabited. In Scandinavian lore, the spirit Hyldemoer, the Elder Mother, resided within it. You did not cut elder wood without asking permission first. To do so was believed to invite misfortune or retaliation.

Across Celtic and broader European traditions, elder is consistently linked to protection, boundaries, and the threshold between life and death. It sits at the edge of the liminal realms.

In magical practice, elderberries are tied to ancestor work and otherworld contact. They are associated with the Great Goddess in her dual aspect, holding both fertility and death without contradiction. Elder groves were considered liminal spaces, places where the veil thins, particularly around midsummer.

The berries themselves carry protective and transformative qualities. Carried on the body, they act as a ward against unwanted influence. Used in ritual drink, they support communication with ancestors and the dead.

It can be used to make magick ink too, due to its rich colour from the berries.

Scott Cunningham notes elderberries for protection and sleep, including their use in dream work. Planted near the home, elder has long been believed to offer ongoing protection and prosperity, though historically it was approached with respect, not ownership.

Note: raw elderberries contain toxic compounds and should never be consumed uncooked.
