Galangal - Alpinia galanga
Protection - Hex-Breaking - Legal Matters - Psychic Development - Luck - Courage - Fire
Galangal arrived in Europe via Arab trade routes roughly a thousand years ago, though it had been used across Southeast Asia long before that. It belongs to the ginger family, but its character is sharper, more direct, and its magical use developed along its own path.
The medieval abbess Hildegard of Bingen recommended it for a range of conditions, particularly those relating to circulation and vitality. Modern research has since confirmed some of its effects, including its role in inhibiting platelet aggregation.
In Hoodoo and related folk practices, galangal is strongly associated with success in legal matters, protection, and luck. It is often carried or burned in preparation for court, used to strengthen position, influence outcomes, and maintain composure under pressure. It is sometimes confused with Low John the Conqueror, but they are distinct roots with overlapping uses.
More broadly, galangal is a herb of movement and force. It protects, but it also pushes. It breaks through resistance, disrupts stagnant conditions, and supports decisive action.
- Burn powdered galangal to break hexes, disrupt unwanted influence, and clear resistance
- Carry in a spell pouch or mojo bag, particularly with silver, for luck and financial attraction
- Use in legal workings to support favourable outcomes and strengthen position
- Add to incense or sachets to sharpen focus and psychic awareness
- Include in protection work where strength and momentum are required
