Liquorice Root - Glycyrrhiza glabra
Love - Commanding - Control - Fidelity - Lust - Balance - Persuasion - Fertility - Domination
The name Glycyrrhiza comes from the Greek for “sweet root”, and the plant has been used for thousands of years. It appears in ancient Egyptian records and was found among the burial goods of Tutankhamun, likely for its medicinal and ritual value.
Nicholas Culpeper assigned it to Mercury, while Scott Cunningham places it under Venus and Water...Liquorice sits between influence and attraction, and persuasion and desire.
Magically, it is used in love, lust, and fidelity work, but also in workings involving influence and communication. Chewing the root before ritual is a traditional method for strengthening personal magnetism.
In European folk practice, it has also been associated with vitality and fertility, particularly in women’s rites. Some modern practitioners emphasise its role in balance, helping to regulate extremes in both behaviour and energy.
