Nettle is one of the oldest documented magical plants in the British Isles, nettle appears in the 10th century Anglo-Saxon Nine Herbs Charm under its Old English name wergulu, alongside mugwort and plantain, used in salves for infection and spiritual protection alike. It grows on boundaries, in graveyards, along roadsides and edges - places where two worlds meet, and that liminal quality is baked into its character.
In European folk practice, nettle was considered a gatekeeper plant. It was fed to livestock before sunrise to ward off evil spirits, hung in doorways to keep malevolence out, and held in the hand to repel ghosts.
Cunningham places it firmly under Mars and Fire, and the Romans understood this intuitively: they used nettle to flagellate aching joints in the cold of Britain, trusting its sting to drive out what did not belong. Mexican spiritualists favoured it in purification baths for the same reason (its aggressive nature was seen as an asset), making it more efficient than gentler plants at clearing what needed to go.
What makes nettle genuinely interesting from a practitioner's standpoint is its duality. It is fiercely protective and simultaneously associated with vitality, courage, and lust. It clears the aura, removes hexes, and stirs dormant energy back into motion. If you are feeling stuck, uninspired, or spiritually sluggish, nettle is a proper wake up call.
- Add to sachets or poppets to remove and return hexes or crossed conditions
- Sprinkle dried nettle around the perimeter of your home to establish a protective boundary
- Use in purification baths when a cleanse needs to be thorough rather than delicate
- Burn on charcoal to clear a space of lingering negativity or unwanted energies
- Carry with yarrow to dispel fear and fortify courage before difficult situations
