Australian red cedar is one of the great trees of the east coast rainforest. For thousands of years before European settlement, Toona ciliata grew throughout the rainforests of New South Wales and Queensland, forming part of landscapes lived with, cared for and understood by Aboriginal Australians.

These trees could become enormous - Mature specimens can reach around 40 to 60 metres in height, earning red cedar its reputation as one of the giants of the Australian rainforest. It is also unusual among Australian trees because it is deciduous, shedding its leaves before producing striking reddish new growth in spring. Its timber ranges from warm red to deep reddish-brown, with a fine grain and distinctive fragrance that eventually earned it the colonial nickname Red Gold.

That name carries a complicated history. European settlers quickly recognised the value of the timber, with red cedar recorded near Parramatta during the early years of the colony and becoming an important export by the end of the eighteenth century. Cedar getters moved ahead of agricultural settlement searching for increasingly distant stands, and extensive logging dramatically reduced the great cedar forests that had once characterised parts of eastern Australia.

For the magical practitioner, Australian red cedar carries strong associations with Country, endurance, purification and deep memory. Trees that can live for centuries become witnesses to enormous periods of environmental and human change. Working with their wood can therefore bring a particular weight to ritual concerned with ancestry, place, resilience and connection to the land beneath you.

Its aromatic wood also makes it particularly suited to smoke work. When gently smouldered, the warm woody fragrance creates an immediate shift in atmosphere and can be incorporated into purification, protection and the preparation of ritual space. There is something grounding about it. Heavy, earthy and old, it lends itself to workings where you want to establish presence before moving into deeper ritual or spirit work.

Australian red cedar is especially valuable for Australian practitioners wanting to develop relationships with plants growing within the landscapes around them. Where ethically sourced material is available, it provides an opportunity to build a practice informed by Australian ecology and the particular character of the east coast rainforest.

A Note on Sourcing

Australian red cedar was heavily logged following European settlement and mature trees are now considerably less common than they once were. Any material used in ritual should therefore be sourced carefully from sustainable, salvaged or responsibly managed sources. Our Australian red cedar is ethically sourced, and we do not source material taken from old-growth rainforest.

Packaging

Our herbs are packaged in 100% biodegradable bags with compostable labels. All apothecary items are filled by volume rather than weight, so the quantity received will vary depending on the cut, weight and density of the individual plant material. Typical fills range from approximately 3g to 40g depending on the herb and selected unit price.
