Rue is one of the most respected protective herbs in the Western magical tradition.

Known as Herb of Grace, Mother of the Herbs, and Herbygrass, Rue has been used for centuries to ward off evil, break curses, clear spiritual contamination, and sharpen discernment. The Romans valued it so highly that it was consumed as protection against malocchio - the evil eye - and carried against poison, misfortune, and harmful influences.

Cunningham’s entry on Rue is among the most practical in the entire materia magica. He records that Rue added to the bath breaks hexes and crossed conditions, while fresh leaves rubbed across floors send harmful workings back to their source. Fresh Rue was also traditionally inhaled before making important decisions, a practice believed to clear emotional confusion and sharpen judgement.
