Sand Ginger, known as kencur in Indonesia and sha jiang in Chinese medicine, is one of several plants commonly referred to as galangal. Native to parts of Southeast Asia, China and India, it has a long history of medicinal, culinary and ritual use.

In Indonesia, Sand Ginger forms part of jamu, the traditional herbal tonic system, where it is associated with vitality, resilience and restoring strength after depletion.

Sometimes called Resurrection Lily, the plant dies back completely before returning with the changing season. This cycle gives it a natural magical association with revival, renewed momentum and bringing movement back to situations that have become stagnant or depleted.

Cunningham places galangal under Mars and Fire, with traditional correspondences including protection, health, psychic development, lust and prosperity.

Galangal also has a strong history in Hoodoo and African-American folk practice, where it became known as Low John the Conqueror or Chewing John.
