White Sage - Salvia apiana
Purification - Protection - Cleansing - Healing - Prayer - Sacred Space - Spiritual Clarity
White Sage belongs to the Indigenous peoples of Southern California and Baja California, including the Chumash, Cahuilla, Kumeyaay, Luiseno, and Tongva peoples, who have maintained a living relationship with the plant for countless generations.
Traditionally, White Sage has been used in ceremony, prayer, purification, and healing practices. The burning of White Sage formed part of active spiritual traditions concerned with cleansing, preparation, blessing, and maintaining right relationship with both community and spirit.
The history of White Sage is important. For generations, Indigenous peoples faced restrictions on the practice of their traditional ceremonies, including the use of sacred plants such as White Sage. Today, increased demand has contributed to illegal harvesting and pressure on wild populations throughout parts of California.
White Sage has long been valued for its ability to clear ceremonial spaces, prepare for prayer, and remove unwanted spiritual influences. It is often worked with before ritual, divination, healing work, or any practice where clarity and sacred space are required.
The plant carries a clean, expansive quality that helps shift the atmosphere of a space while encouraging focus, presence, and spiritual awareness.
